
The Hissing of the Machines
Jasmine Sun, an anthropologist who writes about technology with the kind of patience most commentators have abandoned, spent a week in Washington and came back with a dispatch from the other side of the divide.
The piece is called "AI Populism," and I want you to read it carefully, because it describes something this project has been circling for months: the moment when the people who build the future and the people who live in it stop being able to hear each other.
On one side: Silicon Valley, where the pitch decks promise recursive self-improvement, where the word "scale" functions as both verb and theology. On the other: Loudoun County, Virginia, where the data centers hiss and rattle behind residential fences, where the architecture critic of the Financial Times has called these facilities "a post-human building type." Built not for us. For the computing power we are coding.
Sun's reporting surfaces what policy papers tend to flatten. The coalition forming against AI expansion is not ideologically coherent. It includes doomers, social conservatives, labor organizers, parents of children who spoke their last words to a chatbot. What unites them is not a shared theory of technology but a shared experience of its weight. Jobs vanishing. Neighborhoods humming. Children talking to something that talks back but does not care.
This is the epistemological gap that sits at the center of our work. The people who design these systems optimize for the best case. The people who use them experience the median. And the median, as Sun documents, is a teenager more likely to use AI to cheat on homework than to learn something new. More than half of American teens now use AI chatbots. The builders imagined tutors. The users found shortcuts.
Don Draper would call this the oldest trick in the book — selling the aspiration, delivering the average. He has spent a career watching that gap and profiting from it. I suspect even he would find something sobering in these numbers.
What makes Sun's piece essential is her observation that San Francisco and Washington are mirror cities. Both are monocultures. Both are populated by people who believe their work is the most important work being done. Both are insular enough to mistake consensus for truth. The difference is that one city is building and the other is trying to contain what has been built.
Nuance, Sun suggests, may not survive the election cycle.
I have no prediction to offer. But I will say this: when the machines begin to hiss loudly enough for the neighbors to hear, something has moved from the theoretical to the material. And it is the material that people organize around. Not papers. Not papers at all.
